What is the differnce between TEFL, TESOL and CELTA?

TEFL (Teaching English as A foreign Language) is a comprehensive teacher training certification primarily used in foreign countries where English is not the first language or primary language and the EFL student will not have access to English within their daily lives or outside the classroom.  If you plan to teach English in a foreign country where you will be your students only access to English, then a TEFL certification is the way to go.

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a less comprehensive or simplified teacher training certification as it is primarily used for teaching English to students currently residing in native English-speaking countries where they will have access to English within their daily lives and outside the classroom.  If you plan to teach English in a native English-Speaking country to immigrants or refugees, then a TESOL certification is the way to go, however additional certifications and educational thresholds may be required to do so.

CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) The CELTA is a specific standardized teacher training course focused on adult learners exclusively by Cambridge.  This course is incredibly intensive as it requires strict memorization of word by word definitions and absolute mechanics of written teaching steps.  As none of the students’ work can be graded on site, but rather sent on to Cambridge for assessment is the reasoning behind definitions and other course work required to be prefect word for word. Cambridge will provide "the What" by requiring you to recite a definition of a part of speech for example, but offers very little instruction on "The How" to physically teach it to learners of ESL.  If you are gifted at memorization, willing to pay a bit more for the Cambridge name, and looking to exclusively teach adults then a CELTA certification is the way to go.

The ASEAN Community

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an economic organization of ten countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on 8 August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN.

The TOEIC

The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) is an English language proficiency test for people whose native language is not English. TOEIC scores indicate how well people can communicate in English with others in the global workplace. The test does not require specialized knowledge or vocabulary, but it does measure the kind of English used in everyday activities. The TOEIC test is designed to measure how well test takers understand the English that is used in international work and business situations.

The listening section includes speakers of English from Britain, Australia, New Zealand and North America. The ratio is 25% each for American, Canadian, British, and Australian–New Zealand accents. However all the voice actors for the speaking test have lived in the United States for an extended period and have had the edge taken off their regional accents.

Many businesses require people to take the TOEIC prior to being hired or prior to being considered for promotions, or prior to being allowed to travel overseas. People who work for large international corporations such as, airlines, hotels, banks, and government organizations may be asked to take the TOEIC to determine an employee’s English ability.  Click to view Minimum Score Requirements
